OXYCODONE |
TEST NAME: Oxycodone TEST CODE: 9138 COST: $5.00 San Diego Reference Laboratory is pleased to announce the addition of the test for Oxycodone (Oxycontin®) to our test menu. The $5.00 charge provides an oxycodone specific ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) method of testing with a cut-off of 300ng/mL. To request the test for oxycodone, write “oxycodone” on the bottle label line that says “other”. Oxycodone is known as Oxycontin, Roxicodone and is an ingredient of Percodan, Percocet, Roxicet and Tylox. Oxycodone is usually administered in combination with non-opiate analgesics such as acetaminophen and salicylates for the relief of moderate to severe pain. Oxycodene (6-deoxy-7,8-dihydro-14-hydroxy-3-O-methyl-6-oxomorphine) is a semisynthetic narcotic analgesic with a chemical structure similar to codeine. Given subcutaneously, the drug is approximately equipotent with morphine but has a higher oral/parenteral efficacy ratio. Oxycodone is a central nervous system depressant that may cause drowsiness, dizziness, lethargy, weakness and confusion. The concurrent use of other central nervous system depressants such as alcohol may cause additive depressant effects. Oxycodone can produce drug dependence of the morphine type, and therefore, has the potential of being abused. Psychic dependence, physical dependence and tolerance may develop upon repeated use of the drug. Toxicity in an overdose can lead to stupor, coma, muscle flaccidity, severe respiratory depression, hypotension, and cardiac arrest. Naloxone is a specific antidote. Oxycodone is metabolized by N- and O-demethylation. One of the metabolites, oxymorphone, is a potent narcotic analgesic, while the other, noroxycodone, is relatively inactive. Between 33 to 61% of a single dose of oxycodone is excreted in a 24 hour urine collection and consists of 13-19% free oxycodone, 7-29% conjugated oxycodone, 13-14% conjugated oxymorphone and an unknown amount of noroxycodone. |
